Local Tumescent Anesthetic operation for varicose vein

Abstract
Background : To determine the efficacy and safety of operation of varicose veins using a tumescent anesthetic technique.

Patients & Methods : 58 consecutive patients underwent 86 surgical procedure, including high ligations and stripping of the greater saphenous vein. There were 36 women and 22 men. All patients were operated under local anesthesia.

Results : The operations were easily performed under tumescent anesthetic technique without major complications. 58 patients(36/62.1% female, 22/37.9% male, aged 20-70 years) had varicose vein. Average age at the time of operation was 48.3 years(range, 20 to 70 years). There were 49 unilateral procedures and 9 bilateral operations. Operative time ranged from 24 to 64 minutes (average 38.2 minutes) in the unilateral procedure. The number of incisions per limb averaged 2.7(range, 2 to 5).

Conclusion : Varicose vein removal using the tumescent technique for local anesthesia is a safe and efficient procedure.
